In 2011 a group of leaders in the field began planning for just such an update. Over the next year, and in consultation with members of the Original Panel, the group developed a process and structure for updating the original book. Since October 2012, the Leadership Group—which organizes and facilitates the panel’s work—has had weekly conference calls. Members of the 2nd Panel, who together provide broad expertise in the design and use of cost-effectiveness analyses, were invited during the Fall of 2012 (see the list below). Everyone who was invited accepted with enthusiasm. All are volunteering their time to participate in the initiative.
The Panel is now active, with chapters assigned and chapter outlines completed. Full-panel conference calls have taken place every six weeks since January 2013. Conference calls concerning individual chapters are also ongoing, and interested members of the Original Panel are engaged in the update and have been participating in calls and email correspondence.
The first face-to-face meeting of the Panel is scheduled for October 2013 in conjunction with the annual meetings of the Society for Medical Decision Making. In addition to the efforts of the Panel and the Leadership Group, the Panel’s efforts have in-kind support from the Society for Medical Decision Making, the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Health Services Research Center, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. In addition, the Panel has been awarded AHRQ Conference Grant R13-HS022824 to support a second in-person meeting in the spring of 2014 and funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Grant 71552) for support of the project, including a roll-out conference. The Panel is applying for funding to support additional meetings.
